Spain: Top Ten Past Heroes
Spain are one of the hot favorites to take this summers World Cup, so we thought it only fitting to finish up our Top Ten Past Heroes series highlighting their best players of days gone. Having won the Euro 2008 and gone unbeaten in World Cup qualification, Spain have proven they have match winners in their squad. And the key to their current team is depth, having multiple players that could start for any country for each position on the field. Check out our list of past heroes, and let us know if you think there is anyone we missed.
EMILIO BUTRAGUENO
Career Clubs: 1982-84 Castilla, 1984-95 Real Madrid, 1995-98 Club Celaya
Butragueno played 69 times, scoring 26 goals. He played in two World Cup Finals Tournaments ’86 and ’90. In the ’86 Finals he received the Silver Ball for his displays for Spain.
After retiring he became Real Madrid’s, Director of Football.
LUIS ENRIQUE
Career Clubs: 1989-91 Sporting Gijon, 1991-96 Real Madrid, 1996-2004 Barcelona.
Enrique played 62 times, scoring 12 goals for Spain. He played in three World Cup Finals Tournaments, ’94 ’98 and 2002. In the ’94 Finals, Enrique was caught with an elbow from Italy’s Mauro Tassotti, which resulted in Enrique losing nearly a pint of blood, Tassotti was later banned for 8 games for the incident, he never played for Italy again.
MIGUEL ANGEL NADAL
Career Clubs: 1986-91 Mallorca, 1991-99 Barcelona, 1999-2005 Mallorca.
Nadal played 62 times, scoring 3 goals for Spain. He appeared in three World Cup Finals Tournaments, ’94 ’98 and 2002. He was nick-named “The Beast” for his physical tendencies, but was a tremendous defender with great leadership qualities. He retired from international football after the 2002 Finals.
He is tennis Champion Rafael Nadal’s Uncle and also Rafael’s personal trainer.
JULIO SALINAS
Career Club: 1981-84 Bilbao Atheletic, 1982-86 Atl. Bilbao, 1986-88 Atl.Madrid, 1988-94 Barcelona, 1994-95 Deportivo La Coruna,1995-96 Sporting Gijon, 1997-98 Yokohama Marinos, 1998-2000 Alaves.
Salinas played 56 times, scoring 22 goals for Spain. He represented Spain at three World Cup Tournaments, ’86 ’90 and ’94. Salinas will be remembered by most for his miss in the ’94 Quarter-Finals, when he missed a chance to put Spain into the last four. But he was a tremendous goal-scorer for both club and country.
After retiring he took up a commentary job.
RAFAEL GORDILLO
Career Clubs: 1976-85 Real Betis, 1985-92 Real Madrid, 1992-95 Real Betis, 1995-96 Ecija.
Gordillo played 75 times scoring 3 goals for Spain. He was mostly regarded as a defender but was equally at home in midfield. He was Spanish Player of the Year in the 1979-80 season.
After retiring Gordillo played indoor soccer in the National League. before taking up commentary for a brief spell.
ANDONI ZUBIZARRETA
Career Clubs: 1979-80 Alaves, 1980-81 Bilbao Athletico, 1981-86 Atl. Bilbao, 1986-94 Barcelona, 1994-98 Valencia.
Zubizarreta played 126 times as Spain’s keeper. He played in four World Cup Tournaments, ’86 ’90 ’94 and ’98.He was named Spanish Player of the Year in 1987. He is regarded as Spain’s best ever goalkeeper.
After retiring he became a commentator.
FERNANDO HIERRO
Career Clubs: 1987-89 Valladolid, 1989-2003 Real Madrid, 2003-04 Al Rayyan, 2004-05 Bolton.
Hierro played 89 times ,scoring 29 goals for Spain. He appeared in three World Cups, ’94 ’98 and 2002. Hierro scored one of his most memorable goal in a 1994 World Cup qualifier, when he headed the winner against Denmark, to put 10 man Spain in to The World Cup Finals. In the 2002 Finals, Hierro was named in the All-Star team of the Tournament. He also Captained Spain from 1998-2002.
TELMO ZARRA
Career Clubs: 1939-40 SD Erandio Club, 1940-45 Atl. Bilbao, 1955-56 SD Indautxu, 1956-57 Barakaldo CF.
Zarra played 20 times, scoring 20 goals for Spain. His most memorable goal came in the Quarter-Finals of the 1950 World Cup when he scored the winning goal against England, to put Spain into the last four, their best finish in a World Cup to-date.
After retiring he played with a veteran team and also scored plenty more goals.
MICHEL
Career Clubs: 1981-84 Castilla, 1982-96 Real Madrid, 1996-97 Club Celaya.
Michel played 66 times , scoring 21 goals for Spain. His biggest and most memorable achievement for Spain was when he scored a Hat-Trick in the 1994 Finals against South Korea in a 3-1 win, he also scored a penalty against Belgium in the same Finals. Although only 29 years old, he never received another call up to the National side which was a shame for both the fans and the Spanish national side.
He currently coach’s Getafe in the Spanish La Liga.
JOSE ANTONIO CAMACHO
Career Clubs: 1972-73 Albacete, 1973-74 Castilla, 1974-89 Real Madrid.
Camacho played 81 times for Spain. He was a first choice defender for Spain since he made his debut at 17 years of age. And was a great reader of the game. He played in two World Cup Tournaments.
After retiring he managed the National team in the ’98 and 2002 World Cup Finals, showing he could still read the game even from the bench. He currently coach’s Osasuna.
