What a weekend of English Premier League soccer we just had! It is weekends like this that compliment the fact that the Premier League is one of the most entertaining
leagues in the world. The action played out like a blockbuster movie, with twists and turns all over the place!
Going into the weekend, leaders Chelsea had a 4 point lead over Champions Manchester United, with United having to travel to face cross town enemies Man City. Chelsea themselves had a derby on their hands as they traveled across town to play Spurs. The Manchester Derby was billed as the battle of two of England’s richest clubs, with City trying to prove that their multi-million dollar spending this past summer will lift them to the heights of their crosstown neighbors. But just like 2 of the previous 3 battles between the sides this season, it was United who were victorious thanks to the most unlikely source of them all – Paul Scholes head. The winning goal was scored deep into injury time and capped off a great week for Scholes (who also signed a one year contract extension.) If Scholes had not scored in the 93rd minute, it would have pretty much handed the title to Chelsea as the gap would have been 3 points before they travelled to Spurs for a 5.30pm kickoff.
As it was, there was only a point between the sides and the pressure was back on Chelsea. The Blues failed to take control of their battle, and were dominated for most parts by a rampant Spurs. In fact, in the past week Spurs have beaten both Chelsea and Arsenal, while they take a trip to Old Trafford next weekend. One thing worth noting is that no one has ever beaten the top 3 in consecutive games in the Premier League. John Terry saw red for Chelsea in the 60th minute, but Defoe and Gareth Bale had already put Spurs in a commanding 2-0 lead. After missing several sitters, Spurs fans were left to sweat for the final 2 minutes as Frank Lampard stole in to score in the 92nd minute.
Chelsea’s loss was music to Arsenal manager Arsene Wengers ears, and the Frenchman was no doubt gleaming after they went 2-0 up in the 50th minute of their crunch Sunday battle with Wigan. Surely Arsene’s men would be back to battle at the top. Not so as it turns out, with Wigan scoring an unheard of 3 goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. Ouch!! The loss leaves Arsenal 5 points behind Chelsea and seemingly out of the championship race.
Spurs win and Man City’s loss means both teams swap positions in the battle for the final, and extremely important, Champions League spot. Aston Villa also found a way to win at the weekend over bottom side Portsmouth, meaning they also still have an outside shot at getting 4th spot, but to be honest they should focus more on getting the 6th spot which will ensure European action next season. Liverpool will be the team trying to ensure they don’t get that final spot.
So, with 3 games remaining in the season it seems that Chelsea and Manchester United will be battling alone for the Championship. One single point separates the teams. Next weekend both teams have home games, Chelsea play host to Stoke, while Manchester United take on the red hot Spurs. But it will be the following weekend that everyone will be waiting for as Chelsea travel to Anfield; home of Liverpool FC!
There is no doubt that this weekend will be remembered as one of the all time classics in EPL history, no matter how things finish up. I myself aM extremely excited for next week already and hope that both teams win to keep the excitement level up. My memories go back to the 94-95 season when Blackburn and Man United battled it out on the final weekend for the Championship. On that occasion neither team won on the final day, but Blackburn had a 2 point lead that gave them the title. Will we see something similar this season?
