The question of the summer is where will Wesley Sneijder be once the transfer window closes? The Dutch international has been in pretty sensational form for Inter Milan since his move from Real Madrid two seasons ago, leaving many teams interested in his signature. One of those teams is Manchester United, since their midfield maestro Paul Scholes has just retired. Manchester City have also been strongly linked, while Chelsea have also been expressed an interest in a summer move.
But, Sneijder is still at Inter and he continues to score goals, while reports suggest there have been no bids from any club yet. Media attention has created much confusion on the situation. Sneijder’s happiness at Inter has been called into question, with media reporting he is happy, then not happy, but then happy again. Today, Sneijder hinted that if enough money was offered by another club, Inter would sell – the first public sign that he might be interested in a move.
Recently, Sneijder spent some time in Los Angeles, and actually attended the Real Madrid vs LA Galaxy game. On that occasion, a source close to AttackingSoccer had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Sneijer. When the conversation turned to transfers, Sneijder hinted that he wanted to go to Manchester, but could not state it publicly as there was no bid on the table and he didn’t want to upset Inter fans!
If Sneijder is interested in a move to Old Trafford, a deal will have to be put in place quickly – and that requires Sir Alex Ferguson actually wanting to sign the playmaker. His comments during the US tour suggest he is not that interested in paying big money for Sneijder and is happy with his current midfield – but there is no doubting he would love to have his as Scholes replacement. Who wouldn’t? In my opinion, Fergie is playing mind games in an attempt to defer his interest.
Then there is Manchester City, who reportedly put a $35million bid in last week, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The news source claimed City had signed the 27-year-old Dutch international. A source at Manchester City followed-up shortly after with a statement that no bid for Sneijder had been made. After the Charity Shield final yesterday, City manager Roberto Mancini again stated that City currently don’t have an interest in signing the Dutch star.
So, it remains to be seen where Sneijder will end up. In my opinion, he is either staying put at Inter Milan, or we will be seeing a flurry of transfer action from one of the Manchester clubs in the next few days – Manchester United to be exact!
