Gary Waddock ‘I Was Worn Out Running After Maradona’
The Republic of Ireland opened their their new look Landsdowne Road on Wednesday against Argentina losing 1-0 with a dubious off-side goal. Lionel Messi was by far the most outstanding player to line-out for either team and got a standing ovation from the crowd when substituted early in the second-half. The last time Argentina played the Republic in Dublin was 1980 when the Argentines were reigning World Champions and it was another player who stood out from the rest his name was Diego Armando Maradona who at the tender age of 18 was already a hero in the Republic.
Wycombe managerGary Waddockwas making only his second appearance at International level and had the unenviable task of marking the midfield wizard and this is what he said about that night in May 1980.
Everyone was talking about him before the game, saying what a talent he was. It’s a fantastic memory to have of playing against someone like that. I couldn’t get near him, no one could. But to be on the same pitch as him- you don’t forget those moments.”
“He was head and shoulders above everyone on their team even at that tender age. He was on a different level, which gave you an extra interest watching how his career developed.”
After 75 minutes Waddock was replaced by Gerry Ryan he added: ” I wasn’t injured, I was worn out by that stage he joked”.
After watching the game at the Aviva I think Messi’s performance was pretty similar to Maradona’s performance because nobody could get near him either and when they did they fouled him. Hope Messi doesn’t go down that slippery slope that Maradona did as it would be the biggest waste of talent ever in football.
Argentina Sack Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona has been inevitably sacked as manager of the Argentina National team despite him declaring his interest of staying on as coach.
His job had been in doubt since Germany hammered Argentina at the Quarter- Finals stage of this Summers World Cup in South Africa going down 4-0.
Maradona’s sacking comes after he declared yesterday: “I really want to stay as coach, but it depends on Argentina Football Association President Julio Grondona. If they touch a hair of one of my guys, even if the Masseur or the Kitman, I’m going. I want to continue the adventure but not with just anyone. I chose these people. I want to continue with them.
Grondona now faces a race against time to appoint a successor for the job ahead of Argentina’s Copa America campaign and it seems as though they will be manager-less when to face the Rep of Ireland at the new Aviva Stadium in a few weeks time.
Carlos Bianchi, Alex Sabella, Americo Gallego, Marcelo Bielsa and Ramon Diaz are among the favourites to replace the controversial Diego Maradona as the National team coach.
Maradona Runs Over Cameraman
Argentina coach Diego Maradona has hit the headlines again after running over a cameraman and then insulting the victim.
Back in March Maradona needed minor facial surgery after his pet dog bit him, he also has suffered with his health mainly down to his lifestyle. He has suffered with weight problems leading him to suffer a heart-attack and also been banned for failing a drugs test in his playing days.
But this time he wasn’t the victim, as he was driving to a news conference to name his 23-man World Cup Squad, he was surrounded by Paparazzi and he ran over a cameraman’s leg.
But Maradona been Maradona he shouted from his car: “What an asshole you are. How can you put your leg there where it can get run over man?”
Paramedics were quick to treat the injured man before he was brought to hospital for further treatment.
