Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trappatoni has named his Euro 2012 Finals squad and as hoped and expected Sunderland’s James McClean was named in the squad.

However there was sad news as Wigan midfielder James McCarthy made himself unavailable for the squad following his Dad’s fight with Cancer.

McCarthy said in a statement: “I have made the difficult decision to withdraw my name from selection for the Euro 2012 squad following the diagnosis of my father with cancer and on-going requirement for treatment.

“I have discussed this with the manager. He was very understanding and I thank him sincerely for that.

“I take this opportunity to re-affirm my complete commitment to playing for the Republic of Ireland. It is a huge honour and source of great pride for me and my family.

“Despite not being present, I would like to wish the manage and my team-mates every success in the tournament and hope that Irish fans can understand the reason for my decision at this difficult time.”

I for one can safely say that there’s not one Irish fan who thinks McCarthy has let down his Country and we all hope for his Dad’s recovery from illness.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Shay Given (Aston Villa), Keiren Westwood (Sunderland), David Forde (Millwall)

Defenders: Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), John O’Shea (Sunderland), Sean St Ledger (Leicester City), Darren O’Dea (Celtic), Stephen Ward (Wolves), Stephen Kelly (Fulham), Kevin Foley (Wolves)

Midfielders: Glenn Whelan (Stoke), Darron Gibson (Everton), Keith Andrews (West Brom), Keith Fahey (Birmingham), Damien Duff (Fulham), Aiden McGeady (Spartak Moscwo), Stephen Hunt (Wolves), James McClean (Sunderland)

Strikers: Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Kevin Doyle (Wolves), Simon Cox (West Brom), Shane Long (West Brom), Jon Walters (Stoke)

Standby: Darren Randolph (Motherwell), Paul McShane (Hull City), Paul Green (Derby), Seamus Coleman (Everton), Andy Keogh (Millwall).
