Where Are They Now: Coventry City’s 1987 FA Cup Winners
Coventry City are set to wear their 1987 Retro Shirts in Saturday’s FA Cup 3rd Round encounter with Southampton, to mark their 25th anniversary of their 3-2 extra-time win over Tottenham. So what has become of the history making men behind their one and only major trophy success.
Steve Ogrizovic GK (54): Oggy as he is known at the Ricoh Arena is still part of the Coventry set-up where he is currently the clubs Goalkeeping coach.
Dave Phillips RB (49): Phillips like Oggy is still part of the Coventry set-up as manager of their u-14 squad.
Greg Downs LB (53): After retiring from football in 1995, Downs joined the Police, he’s currently assistant manager of Southern League side Wroxham not to be mistaken for Welsh side Wrexham.
Brian Kilcline CB (49): After retiring in 1998 Kilcline and his Wife went back-packing across India, she even wrote a book about their adventure’s aptly named “The Lion, The Witch and the Ruck-Sack. Kilcline is currently an Ambassador for National Express sponsors of the FA Cup.
Trevor Peake CB (54): Peake took the reigns with Oggy for one game following Roland Nilsson’s sacking in 2001 a 3-0 defeat to Burnley, he’s currently Leicester City’s u-16 manager.
Lloyd McGrath Mid (46): McGrath retired in 1997 and now runs the Hawkesmill Social Club in North Coventry.
Dave Bennett Mid (52): Man of the Match in the Final, Bennett was last heard of working in a warehouse.
Micky Gynn Mid (50): Micky became a Post-Man after retiring in 1995 his round includes the area of Ryton-on-Dunsmore where Coventry train.
Nick Pickering Mid (48): Pickering also became a Post-Man in Wear-side where he also does Radio Punditry.
Cyrille Regis CF (53): Regis was awarded an MBE by her Majesty the Queen in 2008. He currently works for the Stellar Group Ltd, as a football agent.
Keith Houchen CF (51): Spent time coaching at Middlesborough Academy, and currently rents out property in the area.
Graham Rodger CB (44): Played only a minute of normal time replacing injured captain Brian “Killer” Kilcline, but was instrumental in the extra time goal which seen them win the cup. Currently works at Grimsby as a Community coach.
Steve Sedgley Mid (43): Sedgley was an unused sub on the day, but later won the cup with Tottenham in 1991 against Nottingham Forest, he’s currently looking for work having gained a UEFA coaching licence.
John Sillett Manager (75): The larger than life John Sillett can still be seen wheeled around Coventry, and is still the most celebrated manager Coventry ever had.
Premier League Keepers Who’ve Scored?
Everton keeper Tim Howard became only the fourth keeper in Premier League history to score a goal when he scored last night against Bolton in their 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park. The Other three are:
Peter Schmeichel for Aston Villa v Everton in 2001 at Goodison Park. Everton won 3-2.
Brad Friedel for Blackburn against Charlton in 2004, the equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Ewood Park.
Paul Robinson for Tottenham against Watford in 2007, Tottenham won 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

Following the un-timely death of former Liverpool title winning defender Gary Ablett (46), we’ve decided to track down the where abouts of the Merseyside clubs last title winning squad in 1989-90.
Bruce Grobbelaar (54): Liverpool’s most famous keeper currently resides in Canada and sometimes appears as a pundit on Norwegian TV channel TV-2.
Mike Hooper (47): Grobbelaar’s under-study who was never able to step out of his shadow and is currently working as a bouncer at Studio nightclub in Durham.
David Burrows (43): Liverpool’s left-back emigrated to France with his family after hanging up his boots can be found playing recreational football in his new hometown of Dordogne.
Gary Gillespie (51): Liverpool’s former centre-half currently commentates on Liverpool games for their in-house TV station LFC TV.
Alan Hansen (56): Liverpool’s captain is just as famous now as he was in his hayday, co-presenting BBC’s Match of the Day.
Steve Harkness (40): Harkness was forced to retire from the game aged 31 with a back injury which plagued his career, he currently lives with his Wife and kids in Liverpool.

Steve Staunton (42): Currently out of work after failing to make it as a manager most notably the Rep. of Ireland job in 2006-07.
Nick Tanner (46): Forced to retire with a back injury in 1994, currently coaching in the lower echelons of English soccer.
Barry Venison (47): Currently living in California with his Wife and kids had a brief stint as a pundit on Sky Sports and ITV.
John Barnes (48): Currently looking to take over the Rwandan national team. Has managed Celtic , Jamaica and Tranmere since retirement.
Ray Houghton (49): Currently works as a TV pundit on Irish TV station RTE co-presenting the Premiership.

Kenny Dalglish (60): Back in the Anfield hot-seat after leaving the club in 1991 for a new challenge. Did play one game aged 39 against Derby as a substitute.
Former Liverpool and Everton Defender Gary Ablett Dies Aged 46
Former Liverpool and Everton defender Gary Ablett (46) lost his 16 month battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma yesterday.
Ablett started his career with Liverpool playing over 100 games, winning two League title’s 1987-88 and Liverpool’s last title success in 1989-90, he also picked up an FA Cup winning medal in 1988-89 beating Everton 3-2 after extra-time.
After spending seven years with the red half of Merseyside, Ablett then signed for the blue half in 1992 winning another FA Cup medal beating Manchester United 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup Final at Wembley.
Ablett ended his Everton tenure in 1996 joining Birmingham where he played over another 100 games before being released in 1999.
Among Ablett’s other former clubs were Derby on-loan 1985, Hull on-loan 1986,Sheffield United 1996, Wycombe on-loan 1999, Blackpool 2000, and Long Island Rough Riders in 2000-01 before moving into management with Stockport in 2009 before the club went into administration.
Ablett had taken a coaching job at Ipswich where he fell ill on the field an subsequently was taken to Hospital and diagnosed with his fatal disease Cancer.

Brazilian Legend Socrates Dies Aged 57
Brazilian Legend Socrates died aged 57 today. Though a Doctor of Medicine the highly intelligent midfielder was also a shock. He is survived by heavy drinker and smoker. He died after being admitted to Hospital with Gastrointestinal bleeding before dying from septic is Wife and six children.
Socrates played 60 times scoring 22 goals for his Country while also captaining Brazil at the 1982 World Cup Finals in Spain. His signature pass was the blind back heel which is very much a part of the game today with all types of different techniques, he was also a great passer with great vision to match, while he was also as physical as you could get in South American football. Socrates played most of his career in Brazil apart from a short stint in Italy with Fiorentina, he scored207 goals in 396 club games which include 172 in 297 games for Corinthians.

Paolo Di Canio Won’t Score? Fair Play
Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio was never to far away from controversy, but in 2001 the former Italian talisman was awarded a FIFA Fair Play Award for showing the spirit of Fair Play after catching a ball in a goal scoring position to allow the opposition keeper Everton’s Paul Gerrard receive attention after an injury in a 1-1 draw at Upton Park. This was in stark contrst to the Di Canio of 1998 who received an 11 game ban for shoving referee Paul Alcock to the ground.
Boxing Legend Joe Frazier (67) Lose’s Battle With Cancer
Legendary boxing Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier lost his battle against Liver Cancer today, just a month after being diagnosed with Liver Cancer, the killer decease that effects so many Families throughout the World today.
‘Smokin’ Joe as he was fondly known was a winner of Olympic gold in Tokyo ’64 and held the World Heavyweight title fro 1970 to 1973 when the sport was at it’s best.
Frasier was also the first fighter to beat the legendary Mohamed Ali in 1971, who he never forgave for calling him a ‘gorilla’ and ‘Uncle Tom’ a deeply insulting term to the black race.
Frasier fought Ali again in 1974 with Ali victorious after 12 rounds, before the trilogy was complete in 1975 with the ‘Thrilla in Manila’, Ali again victorious in a bruising 14 round’s after Frasier’s corner man Eddie Futch threw in the towel at the start of the 15th round an action Frazier never forgave Futch for.
Frazier’s fight record was 32 wins, 4 losses and a draw his defeats coming against Ali and another great George Forman twice.
