If you happened to catch this weeks CNN Hero, you would have seem that it was a soccer related one – so it is definitely worth a shout out! When Patrice Millet was diagnosed with a deadly cancer, he decided to start living the life he’d always wanted: helping needy kids in his native Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. In 2007, he sold his business and started the FONDAPS youth soccer program, which has provided free equipment, coaching and food to hundreds of children from the slums of Port Au Prince.
But Millet’s program mainly aims to help participants stay out of trouble, learn how to play by the rules and become good citizens. Many children in the program lost relatives in the 2010 earthquake and now live in tent cities. Millet believes his work is even more important now and he’s determined to do all he can to give “his kids” a shot at a better life. Check the below video for more details.
