In the aftermath of a very busy transfer dash yesterday and the British Record signing of Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea, we look at the Top 5 most expensive flops of the EPL, proving to us all that sometimes money can’t buy you quality in the transfer market.
Top 5 EPL Transfer Flops
1) Robinho: Bought for a then record £32.5m in 2008 from Real Madrid, played 41 games scoring 14 goals before demanding a move away from the club sold to AC Milan for £18m.
2) Juan Sebastion Veron: Bought from Lazio for £28.1m by Manchester United in 2001, played 51 games scoring 7 goals. Sold to Chelsea in 2003 for £15m.
3) Andriy Shevchenko: Moved to Chelsea from AC Milan in 2006 for £30.8m, scored 9 goals in 47 games for the Blue’s. Released on a free in 2009.
4) Robbie Keane: Bought by Liverpool from Tottenham for £19m plus add-ons in 2008, scored 5 goals in 19 games for the Reds. Returned to Tottenham several months later for £16m.
5) Alain Boumsong: Bought by Newcastle from Rangers in Jan 2005 for £8m to shore up the Toon defence it never happened, sold to Juventus 10 months later for £3.2m.
