Less than 3 minutes into the game, Man City midfielder Nigel De Jong made an extremely rash challenge on Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa that left the on-loan Marseille winger with a broken leg. X-rays showed a broken tibia and fibula and the midfielder will have surgery Monday morning.
Amazingly, blunder ref Martin Atkinson did not even give a free-kick. TV replays showed it could have been a straight red for Manchester City’s Dutchman.
