The ball that was likened to a beach ball at this years World Cup by players has sold for $74,000 at an auction on eBay.
The “Jabulani ball” was the one used in the World Cup Final between Spain and Holland in which Spain won 1-0 after a Andres Iniesta extra-time goal which gave Spain their first ever World Cup tournament triumph.
The ball had a reserved price of just £120 but was such a unique and popular item that the bidding went up to the $74,000 and the hammer went down on the item as sold.
The money received from the sale of the ball went to the 46664 HIV/AIDS fund which former South African leader Nelson Mandela helped set up for kids born with the disease, the number 46664 was unique in that it was the prison number Mandela wore when imprisoned on Robben Island.
The ball was specially designed in a gold colour unlike previous round games and was also renamed for the final “Jobulani” after the Final was held at Johannesburg.
It must go down as the most expensive beach ball in auction history, at a whopping $74,000.
