I was rewatched the Nike “Write the Future“ commercials today and noticed that all of the players involved actually had pretty sub-par World Cup performances. Wayne Rooney, for example, was a shadow of the player we saw at Manchester United last season, and Cristiano Ronaldo did not look very dangerous. Add to that the fact Ronaldinho didn’t even make the Brazil squad and it starts to look bleak!
So, I got searching for articles and found a really interesting one that pointed to the fact that Nike really did curse their players.
Let’s take a look at the major stars:
Didier Drogba: broke his arm, Ivory Coast eliminated
Fabio Cannavaro : captained underwhelming Italy, which was eliminated
Wayne Rooney : didn’t score, England eliminated
Franck Ribéry : French team imploded and were then eliminated
Ronaldinho : Didn’t even make the Brazilian team
Cristiano Ronaldo : scored once, Portugal eliminated

I wonder if this will actually affect Nike sales considering the Adidas adizero and players have been performing exceptionally (David Villa, Diego Forlan, Lionel Messi.) A few months back, I thought Nike were well ahead of Adidas in terms of market control, but it seems like the “Write the Future” campaign might backfire (I know I don’t want to be living in a trailer looking up at an opposing player celebrating on a billboard…sorry Wayne!)
