How often does a player find out he will be playing at a World Cup with a country other than his country of birth 2 months before it starts?
That is the case for Argentine-born soccer striker Lucas Barrios, who will play in this summers World Cup for Paraguay. Barrios, who plays for Borussia Dortmund in Germany, started his dual citizenship process on 16 March 2010 hoping to get a chance to be in the World Cup 2010. He was granted a Paraguay Passport on April 8th. Barrios is the fourth Argentine to join the Paraguay National team after Jonathan Santana, Néstor Ortigoza and Sergio Aquino. Barrios earned his first call-up to the Paraguay national football team on May 4th for World Cup training camp, and made his international debut versus Ireland on May 25th.
Barrios ended his first season in Germany as 3rd top goalscorer in the Bundesliga with 19 goals in 33 games.
