AC Milan 2 - 3 Manchester United
David Beckham had to settle for second best as the team he loves overcame the team he plays with now at the San Siro. Sir Alex stated he was confident going into the game, and United produced a very effective performance.
Two second – half goal’s from Wayne Rooney, installs last years beaten finalists as firm favorites to go through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and keep hopes alive of a third consecutive final for United.
Not even the concession of a third minute opener for AC Milan, created by Beckham for Ronaldinho, could derail Alex Ferguson’s troops, although they were forced to endure some nervy moments after Clarence Seedorf hauled Milan back into the tie five minutes from time but there was to be no dramatic equalizer at the San Siro. There was time for Michael Carrick to get a second yellow card for kicking the ball away after a foul by Patrice Evra on a Milan player. But that was the final action of a game which United will be gratefull to come away with a wonderful win.
It was Rooney’s first goals in the Champions League this season and only the fourth goal ever United had scored at the San Siro. The return leg will be played at Old Trafford on March 10th.
